Greetings from Wiki Loves Folklore International Team!
Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.
The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.
How to Contribute?
The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. Anti-aliased – Inelegant when modified, because of anti-aliasing techniques. Notice the jagged lines where the green was added.Aliased – Every pixel is standalone, and there are fewer colors (only 9 or so). If it were art, it would be called pixel art. Hi, Enyavar! Aliased maps are raster (non-vector) maps that were made with anti-aliasing disabled. This makes them easily editable by almost anyone with pixel-perfect precision. "Aliased linguistic maps" just means "linguistic maps that are aliased" or "aliased maps featuring linguistic subjects". In my opinion, these kinds of maps are of particular interest to language cartographers, because they offer an accessible, intuitive way for most people to update and correct maps of living languages. The learning curve for SVG files is unfortunately too steep for most people, and beginners often produce bloated files that have to be subsequently recreated. I hope this clarifies why PNG files — non-antialiased (aka aliased) ones in particular — can be particularly useful. --Iketsi (talk) 00:31, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The issue I have here is that you are mixing two kinds of categories: The displayed content and the file format. By creating these particular categories, you are fragmenting for example "Linguistic world maps" into "Aliased..." and "Non aliased..." linguistic world maps, which then would be subdivided again by language families, continents, etc. This kind of duplication of category trees is already a huge headache with "SVG maps of whatever" vs. the same "Raster maps of whatever". Distinguishing between one and the other creates the necessity to re-create each map-category tree in duplicate: One for the single "SVG map of the 2015 city council elections in Nantes" and another category for the single "Map of the 2015 city council election in Nantes": different categories despite displaying the same content.
The more different sub-categories are created, the less obvious it becomes what belongs into which, and what map creators should categorize in which manner. Category:Linguistic maps of the Polish language has currently subcategories for "SVG", "Aliased" and "Language neutral". I see multiple "Language neutral" files that seem to also be "aliased", but are not categorized as such? Yes, it is possible to create "Aliased language neutral linguistic maps of the Polish language", but that means to effectively hide three files in the fifth drawer inside a broom closet. People will not look there.
I am of the opinion that it should suffice to have "Aliased lingustic maps"/"SVG linguistic maps" as one big collection category for the file format. Yes, break that one down by some criterion (e.g. the displayed continent) when multiple hundred files make the category too large, but please don't mix the format with the content unless necessary. Your target group are the few people who wish to modify existing aliased basemaps, after all, they can switch any "Aliased ... map of Asia" from Tibetan to Vietnamese language.
That allows to show and browse for all "Linguistic maps of X-Language" in another single category. In my experience, most users don't care if a map is vectorized, aliased, tri-colored, patterned or none of these - they are interested in what the map shows, and so it's better to find "File:aliased_bicolor_animation_2012.gif" at the same spot as "File:non-aliased_greyscale_scan_1985.jpeg" to easily compare them. Of course, also potentially break that single category down by some content-based criterion (e.g. dialect subgroups, map type) when it becomes too large.

Hi Yupik, sorry for chiming in uninvited: What is this about? You do not mention what was moved that prevented you from holding a presentation.
One section above, I'm also not much satisfied with the movements of many linguistic map categories, but that seems to have happened several weeks ago and as far as I see this did not completely disappear the previous category structure.
On the other hand, I am also heavily engaging in recategorizations (creating new categories, moving files around a lot). I believe most of my actions are pretty uncontroversial, but one could challenge me just as well for not discussing each case for weeks on end. --Enyavar (talk) 17:56, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Daniele. Good question. Language-based categories were a giant mess before I started renaming them according to a consistent naming convention (language first, like Wikipedia itself). I can't find the discussion, but we came to an agreement a few years ago that it would be in the interest of uniformity to prepend the language before other elements in category names. Whether SVG categories specifically should be treated differently is separate issue, which I would raise once the category names are uniform across languages. There is a clear distinction between charts and diagrams:
Charts are about the real world, they reflect statistics, real figures about what has happened, for instance development of national income and prices.
Diagrams are about theories, they usually reflect models, showing how (in this case) the economy works.
And there is the Selectivity principle that says that multi-subject categories (like this new one) should be avoided.
