Description |
English: This hand-colored print of an 1865 Curtis & Miller photograph of Seattle was created in 1915 by E. Jenner for the Washington Title Insurance Company. Included in the display is a guide listing some of the landmarks visible in the image. The photograph was taken from about Main Street, looking North along Commercial Street (now First Avenue South). Visible at the end of Commercial Street is Henry L. Yesler's (1810-1892) mill; until a fire burned down the mill in 1879, Commercial Street did not go all the way north through town, but stopped at Mill Street (now Yesler Way), which runs from east to west towards Elliott Bay. In the distance behind the mill, the original building of the Territorial University of Washington (now University of Washington) sits at the location now occupied by the Fairmont Olympic Hotel on University Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue. Handwritten on mount: Seattle in 1865, Looking North from First Avenue South at Main Street, Presented by Washington Title Insurance Company, 1915 Handwritten on mount: copyright 1915, Curtis & Miller, E. Jenner Landmarks indicated in smaller image on mount: 1 Occidental Hotel - Now Hotel Seattle; 2 Yesler Home - Site of Pioneer Bldg.; 3 Yesler's Saw-Mill - Now Pioneer Square; 4 White Church M.E. - Site of Boston Block; 5 Brown Church M.P. - Site of Frederick & Nelson; 6 Territorial University - Site of Metropolitan Bldgs; 7 Terry Home - Cor 3rd & James St.; 8 St. John's Lodge F.&A.M.; 9 Libby Home - Site of Collins Block; 10 Hillory Butler Home - Site of Butler Hotel; 11 Washington Street; 12 Mill Street - now Yesler Way; 13 Front Street - now First Ave.; 14 Second Street - now Second Ave.; 15 Third Street - now Third Ave.; 16 Columbia Street
1865 is decades too early to actually be by [Asahel] Curtis and Miller (before they were born!) Presumably they worked from an anonymous, old negative, and E. Jenner was downstream of Curtis & Miller |
