Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:04, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Your Flickr uploads
Hello Palosirkka/Archive 1!
Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:
- Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
- You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the whole procedure much easier and faster for you!
Thank you for your support! Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 10:00, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi High Contrast and thank you for the kind words of encouragement and advice! Doesn't the User:FlickreviewR bot nowadays pretty much take care of making sure the highest reso is available? It's somewhat tedious to do manually, especially on a relatively slow uplink connection. I'll certainly take Flinfo for a spin, looks interesting. Palosirkka (talk) 11:06, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Improving with Scour
Hello Palosirkka, I see you improve lots of SVGs with this. But please be careful, do you now that Scour is a little bit imperfekt and buggy? The development and support is seams simply inactive too, but you can also ask User:DieBuche for aid. If you find some exsamplse for this bug that would be helpful. Regards -- πϵρήλιο ℗ 13:31, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Perhelion! Yes, I realize nothing's perfect but I've had great success with Scour. I've only noticed a few images changing visually. Thanks for the heads up! Palosirkka (talk) 13:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
- It is not really legal to change copyrighted and trademarked images and upload them, nor is it pretty polite since the images either have to be hand-checked for any malicious content or plainly reverted. Would be wise to restrict your work on free images. Thanks. --grin ✎ 13:52, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Orthographic projection: Papua
Hi, I see that you recently uploaded new versions of File:Asia (orthographic projection).svg and File:Oceania (orthographic projection).svg. Between them, these two maps have a problem - en:Papua, Indonesia, i.e. the western half of New Guinea island - is omitted from both maps. I think that it should be on the Asia one, even though en:Papua New Guinea (which is the eastern half of the same island) is on the Oceania map. Do you think that it could be added, please? --Redrose64 (talk) 20:51, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, probably should be on either one. Tried adding it. Palosirkka (talk) 06:31, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia logos
Hi, you have uploaded derivative logos of the Wikimedia logos and ask for replacement. As most are copyrighted and trademarked by the Wikimedia Foundation I doubt it's possible we fullfil your requests. Moreover I'm thinking to nominate thoses files for deletion because it's clearly misleading (and probably do not repsect the (c) and (tm) of the Wikimedia Foundation). Best regards --PierreSelim (talk) 07:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! I don't understand what is misleading and think trademarks have nothing to do with this. Copyright infringement this clearly is but I don't think Wikimedia would sue me considering I'm only trying to help. And nobody else can. Palosirkka (talk) 12:47, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
"Scrubbing" SVGs
Hello! You started to upload several "scrubbed" SVGs that I have on my watch list, especially location maps. I just compared the new version of File:Czech Republic location map.svg with the one before. Your "scrubbing" ist not only deleting code that is not necessary for the appearance of the map, it cuts the way how the vectors are described, for example: 697.32642, 297.62214 becomes 697.33, 297.62. Of course the file gets smaller but please have in mind that these maps sometimes get scaled to produce new maps and then all these numbers behind the point get important. Deleting these numbers make the maps worse and only save very few disk space. I suggest you stop scrubbing location maps and revert your uploads. Regards, NNW (talk) 12:07, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- Good point. Will do. Palosirkka (talk) 12:28, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi, per this discussion I've rejected your various outstanding edit requests relating to replacing SVGs with scrubbed versions. If you want to pursue this again, I think a central discussion proposing the changes (eg at COM:VP) is a better way to handle it than lots of edit requests. Rd232 (talk) 14:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Emblem of SFR Yugoslavia.svg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Emblem of SFR Yugoslavia.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hi Palosirkka, thanks for pointing to potential copyvios. However, instead of simply writing "probably" it would be better to describe why you think a file might be a copyvio or to provide a URL. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 13:00, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

I guess there might not be one as copyvio is a serious allegation and doesn't go well with uncertainly or something. Palosirkka (talk) 15:40, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I got messages today about some files suggested for deletion and it seems like the files are already deleted. The files were transfered from sv.wikibooks where it stated that they had appropriate licences. There are probably more files that I have transfered where the licences might be questionable. Please let me know if you find more and I'll restore them on sv.wb where we are currently discussing about a fair use policy. - Averater (talk) 11:20, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

- Hi! I'm not familiar with the procedure but it should be documented here Commons:OTRS. Since you knew where to send the email you probably know more about it than I do. We get a fair number of copyvios and try to filter those out. I guess if you should upload another image which would likely get tagged as copyvio without extra measures, it would make sense to add a Template:OTRS pending. Take care.
